GENERAL INFORMATION
- Lantana is a genus of about 150 species of perennial flowering plants in the verbena family, Verbenaceae.
- They are native to tropical regions of the Americas and Africa but exist as an introduced species in numerous areas, especially in the Australian-Pacific region, South, and Northeastern part of India.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- Lantana does best in well-draining, slightly acidic soil.
- Lantana is pretty tolerant of soil type, but you should amend very heavy clay or sand with organic compost.
FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT
- Feed in-ground lantana plants in early spring, using a dry fertilizer.
- Lantana isn't picky but, in general, the best fertilizer for lantanas is good quality, balanced fertilizer with an NPK ratio such as 10-10-10 or 20-20-20.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Lantana needs full sun in order to bloom properly and that means at least six hours of full sun, eight or more is even better.
- When flowering plants like lantana are deprived of sunlight, they lack the energy to bloom.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- Water newly planted lantana regularly to ensure healthy root development.
- While established plants are drought tolerant, they stage the best show when they receive roughly one inch of water per week, either through rainfall or irrigation.
- Regular watering fuels steady growth and full-size flowers in greater numbers.
