GENERAL INFORMATION
- As known as Ribes-nigrum-'Ben-Nevis'.
- The blackcurrant, also known as black currant or cassis, is a woody shrub in the family Grossulariaceae grown for its berries.
- It is native to temperate parts of central and northern Europe and northern Asia, where it prefers damp fertile soils and is widely cultivated both commercially and domestically.
- The fruit is edible.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- It tolerates a wide range of soil conditions but prefers well-drained, moisture-retentive conditions.
- They need rich, heavy soil.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT
- Scatter 1 tablespoon of 10-10-10 fertilizer evenly on the soil around each currant and gooseberry shrub, as soon as the plant starts growing or about 3 weeks after planting.
- Apply the fertilizer in an 18-inch diameter around the shrubs and don't allow it to touch the stems of the shrubs.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- It prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- Container-grown bushes will normally be planted during the growing season, from April to September so heavy regular watering is necessary until they are established.
- Blackcurrants establish more easily than almost any other fruiting plant.
