GENERAL INFORMATION
- Streptocarpus sect. Saintpaulia is a section within Streptocarpus subgenus Streptocarpella consisting of about ten species of herbaceous perennial flowering plants in the family Gesneriaceae, native to Tanzania and adjacent southeastern Kenya in eastern tropical Africa.
- The Saintpaulia houseplant is more commonly known as the African Violet because it originates from Africa and the flowers look like violets (although they're unrelated).
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- Saintpaulia prefers well-draining soil with good moisture retention.
- Use a commercial African violet potting mix or create a mix of equal parts peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite.
- The soil should be slightly acidic with a pH around 6.0-6.5.
- Avoid heavy or compacted soils that retain too much water.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT
- Saintpaulia benefits from regular fertilization with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer formulated for African violets.
- Dilute the fertilizer to half strength and apply it every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Reduce or suspend fertilization during the winter months.
- Avoid overfertilization, as it can lead to salt buildup and leaf burn.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Saintpaulia thrives in bright, indirect light.
- Place the plant near a north or east-facing window to provide bright, filtered light.
- Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause leaf damage.
- Supplemental fluorescent lighting can be used if natural light is insufficient.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- Saintpaulia prefers consistent moisture but not waterlogged conditions.
- Water the plant from the bottom by placing the pot in a saucer of water for a short period, allowing the soil to soak up moisture.
- Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Avoid wetting the foliage to prevent leaf spots and rot
