GENERAL INFORMATION
- Petunia is a genus of 20 species of flowering plants of South American origin.
- The popular flower of the same name derived its epithet from the French, which took the word petun, meaning "tobacco," from a Tupi–Guarani language.
- Tender perennials, most of the varieties seen in gardens are hybrids.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- They like fertile soil which drains well and, is neutral to slightly acid (pH 6.0 to 7.0).
- Light, sandy soil is ideal.
- Break up the soil by digging down 6 or 8 inches, mix in some organic matter, and then smooth and level it.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT
- It prefers a balanced fertilizer such as 8-8-8, 10-10-10, or 12-12-12.
- In early to mid-July, start using a liquid fertilizer every two to three weeks.
- Spreading petunias may need weekly fertilization, while container-grown plants will respond well to a time-release fertilizer.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Petunias will bloom in bright, indirect light, they do their best in full sun.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- You can water when the top inch of the soil feels dry when you stick your finger in it.
- Hanging petunia plants will most likely need to be watered daily during the summer, and maybe even twice when the weather is extremely hot and/or there is a strong wind.
