GENERAL INFORMATION
- Camellia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae.
- They are found in eastern and southern Asia, from the Himalayas east to Japan and Indonesia.
- There are 100–300 described species, with some controversy over the exact number.
- There are also around 3,000 hybrids.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- Camellias need slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5); they don't grow well in soils with a high pH and will exhibit signs of stress, including yellowing leaves, if the soil is alkaline.
- Camellias do not tolerate wet feet; it's essential that you site them in an area with well-drained soil.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT
- Camellias don't need much fertilizer, and too much nitrogen can burn the leaves and cause them to drop off.
- Spread 1/2 to 1 pound (227 g.) of 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 slow-release fertilizer over the root zone.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Camellias thrive in part shade.
- Protect them from the early morning sun which would scorch the blooms still soaked with dew.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- Water young shrubs deeply to encourage the root system to spread downward.
- Once the tree is mature, it needs less water. In time, you may not have to irrigate at all.
