GENERAL INFORMATION
- Platycerium, also known as Staghorn Fern, is a unique and captivating type of fern that's prized for its distinctive appearance.
- It belongs to the Polypodiaceae family and is native to tropical regions, often found growing on trees or rocks.
- The plant gets its common name from its fronds, which resemble the antlers of a stag or deer.
- Staghorn Ferns are epiphytic, meaning they typically grow attached to other surfaces, like trees or wooden boards, rather than in the soil.
- The fern's fronds have two distinct forms: sterile, flat, and shield-like fronds that anchor the plant and fertile, antler-shaped fronds that produce spores.
- Platyceriums come in various species and sizes, with some reaching impressive dimensions, making them suitable as eye-catching focal points in gardens or interior decor.
- They prefer bright, indirect light and can thrive both indoors and outdoors in a shaded or filtered light environment.
- Staghorn Ferns are low-maintenance and typically require less watering than many other fern species. They are often mounted on wooden boards or plaques.
- To water, it's best to soak the entire plant or mist it regularly to maintain humidity around the fronds.
- Platyceriums are prized for their unique and artistic appearance, making them a popular choice among plant enthusiasts and collectors.
- They can be a wonderful addition to green walls, vertical gardens, or as standalone pieces of living art.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- Use a well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter.
- A mix of peat moss, perlite, and pine bark is suitable.
- Consider mounting the fern on a wooden board or in a hanging basket with a suitable mix.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Platycerium ridleyi prefers bright, indirect light.
- It can tolerate some direct morning or evening sunlight, but avoid intense midday sun.

WATER REQUIREMENT
- Keep the fern's medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Water thoroughly when the top inch of the medium feels dry.
- Water less frequently during the dormant winter months but do not allow it to completely dry out.
- Water the basal shield fronds (the round, flat fronds at the base) sparingly, mostly focusing on the fertile fronds.
