GENERAL INFORMATION
- Spondias dulcis, known commonly as ambarella in Sri Lanka or June plum, is an equatorial or tropical tree, with edible fruit containing a fibrous pit.
- Among various colloquial names are Otaheite apple, Tahitian quince, Polynesian plum, Jew plum, and golden apple.
- While the fruit is still firm, the flesh is crisp, juicy and subacid, and has a somewhat pineapple-like fragrance and flavor.
- If allowed to soften, the aroma and flavor become musky and the flesh is difficult to slice because of conspicuous and tough fibers extending from the rough ridges of the 5-celled, woody core containing 1 to 5 flat seeds.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- It grows on all types of soil, as long as they are well-drained.
- It has been noted that some trees can suffer from some nutritional disorders if the soil is too alkaline.
