GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Akihime strawberries are a variety bred in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. 
  • They are known for their large size. 
  • Akihime strawberries have a strong sweetness and low acidity, resulting in a mellow, delicious flavor. 
  • When fully ripe, they turn bright red near the stem. 

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • Compost is another key to growing a strawberry patch that produces big, sweet berries.
  • Make sure that the soil has been fully amended with good compost/composted manure and a good drainage pot.

  • Use a commercial 10-10-10 food or, if you are growing organically, any of a number of organic fertilizers will do.
  • Some farms use organic fertilizers like rice husks and rice bran, and rely on bees for pollination.

  • Water adequately, about one inch per week.
