GENERAL INFORMATION
- Amaryllis is the only genus in the subtribe Amaryllidinae.
- It is a small genus of flowering bulbs, with two species.
- The holiday season just isn't complete without the radiant blooms of Amaryllis.
- Luckily, these festive flowers are among the easiest to grow and make excellent long-term houseplants.
- Grow them indoors during the winter for stunning centerpieces and move them outside for a refreshing summer vacation.
- In warmer regions, Amaryllis are content outdoors year-round and offer vibrant displays of color in the spring.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- The preferred soil mix for amaryllis is high in organic matter such as two parts of loam soil to one part of perlite to one part of well-rotted manure.
- If manure is not available, another source of organic matter, such as peat, leaf mold, composted bark or wood or compost, may be used.
- They prefer well-draining soil.
FEEDING/FERTILIZER
- Use any slow-release or liquid fertilizer that has an N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10.
- Apply every 3-4 months.
- Feed the plant 2-4 times monthly either every week or bi-monthly.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Amaryllis can tolerate both sun and shade fairly well but typically fares better somewhere in between – like partial shade.
- Too much sunlight can lead to leaf burn, while flowering may be limited in too much shade.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- Amaryllis bulbs need constant moisture during the main growing season of spring and early summer.
- The first 2 inches of soil need to be damp for proper growth.
- The key is to keep the bulb moist during growth so that it has ample resources for large blossom development.
