GENERAL INFORMATION
- Prunus mume is a Chinese tree species classified in the Armeniaca section of the genus Prunus subgenus Prunus.
- This tropical plant is highly sought after during Chinese New Year as it is believed to usher in luck.
- When the signature bright yellow flowers fall off, they resemble gold sprinkled on the ground. and this is why its Chinese name, man di huang jing 滿地黃金, literally translates to “gold all over the floor”.
- The plant can be kept indoors for up to three weeks during the blooming period and should be watered every day.
- Once all the flowers have dropped, place the plant in a sunny area and after new leaves have sprouted and matured, pluck them off to quicken the flowering process.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- They need deep, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.
FEEDING/FERTILIZER
- If your mature apricot is in good general health but shows reduced vigor and poor fruit production, it is time to fertilize.
- Apply a balanced fertilizer, 16-16-16, for example, in early spring (late February or March) and fall (late September or October).
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Full sun.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- Keep the plant well-watered weekly, especially during bloom and fruiting.
- Use a drip irrigation system to avoid wet leaves, flowers, and fruit.
