Description

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • A cherry blossom is a flower of many trees of genus Prunus.
  • The most well-known species is the Japanese cherry, Prunus serrulata, which is commonly called sakura (桜 or 櫻; さくら).
  • They are widely distributed, especially in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere including Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Mainland China, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, Thailand, and West Siberia.
  • Along with the chrysanthemum,[citation needed] the cherry blossom is considered the national flower of Japan.
  • All varieties of cherry blossom trees produce small, unpalatable fruit or edible cherries.
  • Edible cherries generally come from cultivars of the related species Prunus avium and Prunus cerasus.
  • The Cherry Blossom Tree is a medium-sized flowering spectacle, reaching between 40 and 50 feet tall.
  • Minimal pruning is needed for this cultivar, which naturally produces a rounded shape.
  • The Cherry Blossom Tree exhibits a moderate growth rate, ranging between 2 and 4 feet a year.

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • Plant in well-drained, moist soil that is not overly wet.
  • Although adaptable to many soil types, Cherry Blossom Trees prefer acidic soils.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER

  • A common recommendation is to fertilize cherry trees once a year.
  • Applying a low-nitrogen fertilizer such as 5-10-10 in early spring, about a month before bloom.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT

  • Full sun, partial shade, or mostly shady locations will all work.

WATER REQUIREMENT

  • During the first season, Cherry Blossom Trees require moderate watering care, preferably once a week for 30 minutes or to a depth of 18 inches.
  • Once established, simply water once every two to three weeks.
