GENERAL INFORMATION

  • The Balady citron is a variety of citron, or etrog, grown in Israel, mostly for Jewish ritual purposes.
  • Not native to the region, it was imported around 500 or 300 BCE by either Jewish or Greek settlers.
  • Initially not widely grown, it was promoted and popularized in the 1870s by Rabbi Chaim Elozor Wax.

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • Citrus prefer a soil pH of 6.0–7.0.
  • An ideal citrus soil is well-structured, with good drainage and a minimum of 60 cm of topsoil.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER

  • All citrus trees will benefit from a slightly nitrogen-rich or balanced NPK fertilizer that also has some micro-nutrients in it.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT

  • Full sun.

WATER REQUIREMENT

  • With ground-planted citrus trees, watering should happen about once a week, whether from rainfall or manually.
  • Be sure the area has excellent drainage and that you soak the ground deeply at each watering.
  • If the drainage is poor, the tree will get too much water.
