GENERAL INFORMATION
- Solanum Mammosum, also known as ‘Cow’s Udder’, 'Nipple Fruit', is a uniquely shaped fruit, that is commonly used in building Chinese New Year trees, due to its auspicious golden-colored fruit.
- As the fruit has five ‘fingers’ (a similar sounding word to ‘sons’ in Cantonese), it is hoped that the house in which it is placed will be blessed with a similar amount of male offspring.
- Another reason it has been adopted widely as a harbinger of luck is that the protrusions are thought to represent generations.
- Five generations living harmoniously under the same roof would bring happiness, prosperity, and longevity for the family.
- It's a perennial plant that has lots of thorns on the leaves or stems, bears purple flowers, and looks like a small tree or shrub when grown here.
- It shares the same family as the tomato and potato and, it is regarded as a very auspicious plant for the Lunar New Year season.
- The secret is in the fruits that are pear-shaped and has 5 protrusions.
- These protrusions look like teats or nipples but we like to call them 'fingers' which in Cantonese sounds like 'ji' (子), meaning sons.
- Perfect for your decoration during this festive season!
