GENERAL INFORMATION
- Malabar spinach is a splendid edible plant. It is extremely heat-tolerant, providing gobs of nutritious greens while others have succumbed to the heat.
- Malabar spinach (Basella alba), known locally in Singapore as di huang miao (帝皇苗), Indian Spinach, 落葵, 木耳菜
- This beautiful plant is not a true spinach but a different species (Basella alba).
- This heat-loving Asian vine has lovely green stems and delicious, succulent leaves that are great in salads, and stir-fries, and perfect for smoothies.
- The vines produce tons of deep purple berries.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- Malabar spinach will grow well in a variety of soil conditions but prefers moist fertile soil with plenty of organic matter and a soil pH of between 6.5 and 6.8.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT
- Work a generous amount of organic soil conditioner into the soil with a garden fork.
- Add some slow-release 10-10-10 fertilizer to the site as well.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Malabar spinach plants can be grown in part shade, which increases the leaf size, but it prefers hot, humid, and full sun exposures.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- For the best flavor keep the soil evenly moist.
- In the warmest areas of the low desert, it may need water every day.
