GENERAL INFORMATION
- The sago palm (Cycas revoluta) is a popular houseplant known for its feathery foliage and ease of care.
- This is both a great indoor/outdoor plant for beginners and makes an interesting addition.
- While the name might imply that it is a palm, this plant is actually considered a cycad, one of the oldest groups of plants dating back to prehistoric times — hence the plant’s hardiness.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- Sandy, quick-draining soil is best for sago palms as heavy, moist soil leads to long-term health issues in the roots.
- A commercially prepared cactus potting soil works well, although you can also create your own potting mix by combining 2 parts potting soil, 1 part washed garden sand and 1 part milled peat moss.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT
- Fertilize Sago Palm a few times a year, in spring and summer, to keep it healthy.
- Use a general-purpose fertilizer labeled for houseplant use.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Sago Palm can take the direct sun on its foliage when grown as a houseplant, even in hot summer areas.
- If your Sago Palm doesn't get enough light, the leaves will grow longer (stretching toward the light); bright light results in shorter leaves.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- Sago Palm likes life on the dry side and it hates overly moist or soggy soil.
- The frequency of watering will depend on your Sago Palm's pot size, how much light it gets, and the indoor temperature of your home.
